While most people come to
Rancho Bernardo to visit Yosemite National Park (and the rancho makes an
excellent base for visiting the park via Highway 140, the all year highway)
there are many other interesting places to visit in the area:
Mariposa, California The
mining town of Mariposa is one of the southernmost links in the "gold-chain"
and is a quick drive from Rancho Bernardo. The town boasts the oldest
Courthouse in continuous use west of the rockies, a quaint historic downtown
section and an overall pioneer ambiance. Festivities in Mariposa
usually carry a western or pioneer theme. The California State Mining
and Mineral Museum, the Mariposa County History Center, art galleries,
antique shops and eateries await your visit and can provide for a relaxing
day. For more information on the town try

Mariposa or the Mariposa County Visitors Bureau.
Lake Bagby and Lake McClure These twin lakes provide
for endless fun for the avid water enthusiast. Ideal for swimming
and fishing the lake is also a haven for other water recreation such as
boating, skiing and houseboating.
Merced
River Designated a wild and scenic
river, the river fairly boils with the snow pack runoff!! Cold water
drops from Yosemite to provide a swift current which sparks some spectacular
rapids! The river provides for great trout fishing and picnicing
or, for the really adventurous, enjoy one of the many rafting excursions
offered each spring by Zephyr Whitewater Expeditions and other local commercial outfitters.
Hornitos Once
known as the "wildest town in the west," some tales still connect the town
with the legendary bandito Joaquin Murrieta. Now Hornitos is a sleepy
little town known more often for its ghost-like qualities and friendly
inhabitants. Photographers and lovers of the old west will not want
to miss a tour of this little gem.
Whether you are spending
the day in town or Yosemite National Park, Rancho Bernardo is ideally located
for easy access to great daytime recreation and blissful peace and privacy
in the evenings.
